Whether you have Irish heritage or not, it’s hard to ignore when it’s St Patrick’s Day!
If you’re wondering what all the excitement is about on March 17th, let me explain. Today is a national holiday in Ireland, where people honour their patron saint, celebrate Irish culture, and—of course—enjoy the festivities.

With my paternal grandmother hailing from Northern Ireland, I’ve always had a personal connection to the Emerald Isle and its traditions.

But you don’t need Irish ancestry, nor to be a Christian, to appreciate the global impact of St. Patrick’s Day. Millions across the world join in the celebrations, from Dublin to New York and beyond. Green is the colour of the day and is festooned everywhere along with leprechauns and shamrock.

Seven Fascinating Facts About St. Patrick

On a recent Business Trip to Dublin, I visited St Patrick's Cathedral and discovered some interesting facts about St Patrick. They are:

☘️ While the patron saint of Ireland, historians believe St Patrick was born in Britain, some say in Banwen, a village in the Dulais Valley of Wales around the 5th century AD.

☘️ Originally named Maewyn Succat, he was kidnapped by pirates as a teenager and sold into slavery in Ireland, where he worked as a shepherd.

☘️ After six years, he escaped and reunited with his family, later training as a cleric.

☘️ He felt called to return to Ireland to convert its people to Christianity.

☘️ St. Patrick was never officially canonized by the Catholic Church, as the formal process did not exist in his time.

☘️ He became the first bishop of Armagh and remains one of the most significant figures in Irish history.

☘️ The first St. Patrick’s Day parades weren’t in Ireland but in St. Augustine, Florida (1603), Boston (1737), and New York (1762).
